Greekscapes Community Heritage Day - Open Call
Description
Greekscapes Community Heritage Day
Bring Your Archives. Share Your Story. Shape Our Collective Memory.
The Hellenic Centre and the Greekscapes Project (www.greekscapes.org) invite members of London’s Greek and Greek-Cypriot communities to take part in a special Community Heritage Recording Day – an event dedicated to preserving the living history of the Greek diaspora in London.
We are looking for photographs, objects, memorabilia, personal, community, and business archives that tell the story of Greek everyday life in the city.
These may include but not limited to:
Photographs of early migration, community development, and family arrivals
Family, community, club, society, and business paper archives
Images of businesses, cafés, restaurants and shops
Church events, weddings, baptisms, funerals, and festivals
Community gatherings, music nights, theatre and other related performances
Posters, tickets, programmes and invitations
Letters, certificates, documents or newspaper cuttings
Objects brought from Greece or Cyprus that carry migration stories
Objects related to Greek business and societies/organisations established in London
We are particularly interested in materials that reflect:
The arrival and settlement of Greek and Greek-Cypriot families
The establishment of neighbourhoods and businesses
The development of churches and community buildings across London
Cultural and religious life
Music and diaspora performance traditions
Community organisations, festivals, and shared celebrations

What Will Happen on the Day?
Upon arrival to the Hellenic Centre:
Our team will professionally digitise your photographs and archival materials
We will photograph and create 3Ds selected objects
We will record your stories and memories connected to these items
All materials will be returned to you on the same day
Nothing leaves your possession. We preserve the memory — you keep the originals.
With your permission, selected materials and recordings will contribute to:
A public exhibition at the Hellenic Centre
The Greekscapes Virtual Museum of Greek London
Research publications and documentary outputs
A community archive documenting the Greek diaspora in Britain
Why Participate?
Greek heritage in London is not only found in cathedrals and institutions — it lives in family albums, shop counters, music nights, migration documents and everyday objects carried across borders.
Your photographs, keepsakes and memories are part of a larger story:
a story of movement, resilience, entrepreneurship, faith, music and belonging.
By sharing them, you help ensure that future generations understand how Greek communities established themselves, built businesses, created festivals, sustained language and transformed neighbourhoods across the city.
Be Part of the Record
Greekscapes works in partnership with the Hellenic Centre, the Rebetiko Carnival and the Society for Modern Greek Studies, with heritage support from Cerigo Heritage Consultancy Ltd. The project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
This is a collaborative project — and the archive cannot exist without you.
Bring an object. Bring a photograph. Bring a memory.
