Green Drinks: Taste & Talk Sustainable Wine 🍷
Event description
Who else sometimes forgets we have the southernmost wine region in the world on our doorstep?
Join us for our June Green Drinks at The Winery in Arrowtown to discover the sustainable practices that are happening in our local vineyards and wineries.
A more informal evening than our usual Green Drinks, the focus will be on tasting local wines, hearing from those in the industry about their sustainable story and asking them all the questions you want! There will also be the chance to taste any of the wines on offer at The Winery.
We're thrilled to be joined by some of the region's incredible wineries:
🍷 Carrick was founded in 2000 and is located in Bannockburn. The team makes wines using only hand-picked, organically-certified, estate-grown fruit, with 100% indigenous yeast and minimal winery additions. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 2008 and is certified organic through BioGro. Carrick is also certified sustainable by SWNZ and was named ‘Sustainable Winery of the Year’ at the 2021 NZ Organic Wine Awards.
🍷 VALLI was founded in 1998 by pioneering Otago winemaker Grant Taylor to create single-vineyard wines highlighting the different sub-regions of Otago. VALLI produces pinot noirs from Gibbston, Bannockburn, and Bendigo in Central Otago and the Waitaki Valley in North Otago, as well as a Pinot Gris from Gibbston and a Riesling from Waitaki. In 2015, established winemaker Jen Parr joined Grant in the winery where the pair aims to create wines with honesty, integrity, and most importantly, a sense of place.
🍷 Pioneer winery Gibbston Valley Winery began its organic programme in 2010 and is on track to get 100% of its company owned vineyards fully converted by 2023. Their practices are designed to maintain and enhance the vineyards' health and wines’ balance. They believe the intrinsic health and nature of an organic site is more vividly portrayed in both vine and wine. Sustainability and organic questioning, for Gibbston Valley, compels a wider consideration of ecosystem and inputs.
🍷 Burn Cottage has been at home in the foothills of the Pisa range since 2002 and believes in minimizing sulphur usage and avoiding all additives whenever possible. They don't use cultured yeasts, bacteria, associated nutrient products and filters in their winemaking and avoid racking whenever possible. Their vine work/farming is carried out according to lunar and celestial rhythms, with all grapes being handpicked. Burn Cottage wines talk of place, climate, geology and most importantly of the people that make the dream possible.
Join us from 7pm on Thursday 17th June at The Winery Arrowtown for great conversations, delicious wine and insights into a growing industry on our doorstep.
As always, our June Green Drinks is open to everybody 18+.
