Green Drinks: The Future of Skiing in NZ
Event description
How much snow will we see on the mountains this winter? Is the snow level reducing each year? Will we still be able to ski in Queenstown over the coming decades? If the mountains are doomed to become dirt year round, is there anything we can do about it?
To get to the bottom of this, we’ve invited Protect Our Winters and NIWA to our June Green Drinks to spill the tea on how Queenstown winters are really coping.
Join us from 7pm on Thursday 16th June at the new Sudima Hotel in Five Mile (bar will be open & a snack menu available).
Meet your speakers:
❄️ Dr Jono Conway - Hydrological Forecasting Scientist for NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research)
Jono has worked on a number of research projects on snow, ice and water levels in New Zealand. You might see him often quoted on NZ news articles on those themes. He will be sharing the science about our winter climate, whether it’s changed over the years, what’s predicted in the decades ahead and what that means for our ski industry.
NIWA's mission is to conduct leading environmental science to enable the sustainable management of natural resources for Aotearoa and the planet.
❄️ Protect Our Winters (POW)
Protect Our Winters Aotearoa connects passionate outdoor enthusiasts and everyone who loves and needs winter to generate positive climate outcomes. They focus on educational initiatives and community-based empowerment to protect New Zealand’s’ alpine environment from the damaging effects of climate change.
Protect Our Winters will share this empowerment with us through interactive activities that highlight simple actions we can take as locals, businesses and winter mountain lovers with some interactive activities.
As always, Green Drinks is open to everybody so bring a friend, grab your $5 tickets and let's talk about how we can protect our Winters here in Queenstown.
We’ll have North Face goodies up for grabs on the night from our donation draw, and the chance to not only hear from NIWA and Protect Our Winters but also chat with others in the community, local businesses and see how we can work together to look after the place which gives us so much.
Get your ticket now and we'll see you on the 16th ⛷️
*Huge thanks to our main sponsors, Fujifilm, for making so much of what we do at Sustainable Queenstown possible.
