    Event description

Discover Greenwich Village in the early 20th century, America’s first great Bohemian center. In the company of Marc Catapano, visit landmarks like the Provincetown Playhouse, where Eugene O’Neill revolutionized theater, the Whitney Studio Club, home to the Ashcan School Painters, and the Washington Square Park Arch, where on January 23, 1917, Village Bohemians proclaimed the Free and Independent Republic of Greenwich Village.

Step back in time to early 20th-century Greenwich Village and immerse yourself in its vibrant bohemian culture and artistic innovation. Explore the haunts of writers and poets like Edna St Vincent Millay and Eugene O'Neill, and discover where radicals like John Reed and Emma Goldman organized revolutionary activities. Uncover the Village’s whimsical tea rooms, such as the Will o’ the Wisp and the Mad Hatter. Learn about John Sloan, Edward Hopper, and the social realism of the Ashcan School Painters. Visit the Washington Square Arch, where in 1917, a group of artists and bohemians declared the Free and Independent Republic of Greenwich Village!
