'Grita Mi Negrita' Showing

Join us for the residency showing of 'Grita Mi Negrita' by Angel Miguel Garcia. This free showing is not a full production, but a first look at a work in progress.

Grita Mi Negrita is a movement and music-driven odyssey that follows Carmen, an afro-latina trans person traveling to Mexico for a spiritual retreat. Through temazcal ceremonies and elemental therapies, she hopes to heal from a dark secret she’s never spoken aloud. Her retreat transforms into a mythic confrontation with ancestors, deities, and colonial forces that threaten to consume her whole. Carmen must navigate inherited pain and buried memory to arrive at a deeper form of self-reclamation, finding new meaning in her identity, her body, and her grito. Blending rap/hip-hop, musical theatre and the rural folk style of Ranchera music, the show explores the solidarity and interconnectedness of black and latine communities while also highlighting the historical tensions and cultural fractures that shape them.
