Interested in growing your own mushrooms?

In this session, Neil Symington will share some important concepts and practical advice for growing different types of funghi at home. Neil will provide a brief background on fungal ecology and describe some popular methods for home cultivation of edible mushrooms including button mushrooms, oyster mushrooms and shiitakes.

The session will include a practical demonstration of several important techniques including:

  • pasteurising the substrate
  • innoculating growing containers
  • creating a suitable fruiting environment.

Neil will share useful resources and advice for getting started, including how to avoid common issues such as contamination, poor yields, slow growth, or disfigured mushrooms.

About the presenter

Neil Symington is a Kangaroo Ground local with a keen interest in permaculture and citizen science. He is currently undertaking a fungal ecology course facilitated by Peter McCoy, the author of Radical Mycology.
