Growing Green with Pride in Prince George's County: Suitland Parkway Edition
Event description
Known as a busy commuter route from central Washington to its eastern suburbs, the parkway is also a major nature preserve, flanked on each side by hundred of acres of forested hillside. These woods shelter the area’s many hilltop apartment buildings from the noise and pollution of the roadway below. In places, the valley is so narrow and the hills so steep that, viewed from above, the road seems to disappear. Numerous streams and unusual rock outcroppings add interest to the landscape.
Ward 8 Woods has removed more than 430,000 pounds of trash from the woods of Suitland Parkway in DC. We're not turning out attention to the even more extensive Maryland portion of the parkway.
On October 19 as part of the county-wide Going Green with Pride event, we'll be cleaning out a major dump site alongside a shopping center near Naylor Road Metro Station.
The site includes a steep hill and overgrown vegetation, so be sure to dress properly:
-Hiking boots or work boots if you have them, and old sneakers if you don’t.
-Full-length pants (not shorts) to protect against thorns, poison ivy, and ticks.
Clothes you won't mind getting dirty.
Ward 8 Woods will provided gloves, trash bags, and tools. We provide a cooler with water, but volunteers should bring their own water bottle.
If you need to reach us for any reason before, during, or after the event, call Nathan Harrington on 202-520-2742.
