Craft, Connect & Learn!

Join an inspiring, hands-on community art project that explores gut health, the microbiome, and the fascinating gut-brain connection! No matter your skill level, you can crochet, knit, weave, or stitch while learning from leading researchers about the wonders of the gut.

This creative collaboration, led by Neural Knitwork artists Pat Pillai, Rita Pearce, and Mary Hayman, brings together science and art to promote mental health and well-being. The Gut Feelings project invites everyone to contribute handmade textile microbes, gut cells, and intestinal villi, which will form an immersive, large-scale artwork—think giant microbes, a woolly gut cross-section, or maybe even a walk-in gut!

What to Expect:

  • A full day of crafting—create microbes, gut villi, and more, to contribute to a final artwork
  • Learn from expert gut microbiome researchers
  • Engage with artists, scientists/ researchers and fellow participants in a fun, welcoming space
  • All materials provided (but feel free to bring your own!)

Come along, get creative, and be part of this unique fusion of science and art!

* Welcome to all, with registration required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please inform of any accessibility or special requirements in the registration form. *

Gut Feelings is an ongoing initiative culminating in a stunning exhibition at Broadhurst Gallery, Hazelhurst Arts Centre, from 15 August – 2 September 2025, during National Science Week. Want to get more involved? Contact gutfeelingsartproject@gmail.com for details.
