    Event description

On Thursday 27th June, the night before the Matariki Public Holiday, we will host the cornerstone event of the 2024 Feast Matariki calendar - The Hakari | Feast.

Held in The Great Hall inside Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre, this will be a very special evening to come together to feast. The crew will be cooking over fire, showcasing some of our incredible kai and sharing stories of how it made it to our plates.

The menu by Chef and Eat NZ Kaitaki Josh Hunter (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) of Base Food By Fire and @whakapapa_of_your_kai, has been designed in a deeply personal and meaningful way, his version of Kai Māori. It includes four courses, five starters, a whole poaka and many twists and surprises. He’ll be cooking alongside Base Food By Fire Executive Chef Maty Johns & Chef / Eat NZ Kaitaki Matua Murupaenga from Tāmaki Makaurau. You’ll also be entertained by the talented waiata duo; KP and Savannah!

Tickets include a multi-course set menu and drinks pairing with either alcoholic or non-alcoholic options.

Gather your whānau, friends and colleagues and join us to celebrate Matariki with kai!

    FEAST MATARIKI 2024

This winter, from 19th to 27th June, we’re celebrating Kai Hau Kai as our inspiration for Feast Matariki.

For Ngāi Tahu, it was originally a way and place that people came together around food, celebrated abundance, feasted and traded excess. One of the features of these gatherings was a hakari or a stage upon which food was placed to emphasise abundance.

So in 2024, with Tīrama Mai, we’re going to recreate the stage at Te Matatiki Toi Ora / The Christchurch Arts Centre. It will be the focus for events there including The Hakari | Feast, The Shortest Meal and our version of Kai Hau Kai.

We’re proud that our Ōtautahi events are led by Kaitaki Ngāio Cowell (Ngaati Te Ata Waiohua, Waikato Tainui, Ngāti Porou) and Reese Harrison (Ngāi Tahu).
