Hālāwai Presents: Kumulipo Workshop with Kumu Mehanaokala Hind

Join Kumu Mehanaokala Hind, Native Hawaiian cultural practitioner, scholar, and kumu hula, for an intimate workshop centered on the Kumulipo, the epic Hawaiian creation chant.

Through language, oli (chant), and cultural practice, Kumu Mehana will introduce participants to the Kumulipo’s cosmology, structure, and enduring cultural significance. Blending scholarly insight with a practitioner’s perspective, she will offer a meaningful connection to ancestral Hawaiian knowledge.

During this interactive workshop, participants will:

• Trace Hawaiʻi’s pre-contact history through the Kumulipo’s 16 wā, from pō to ao

• Explore its biocultural pairings of ocean and land life

• Learn proper breath, tone, and vocal techniques for Hawaiian oli

• Practice chanting a section of the Kumulipo together

Whether you are new to oli or deepening an existing practice, this rare New York City gathering offers an opportunity to learn directly from one of Hawaiʻi’s respected cultural voices.

The workshop welcomes Kānaka Maoli, hula practitioners, Indigenous and Native peoples, scholars, scientists, poets, designers, vocalists, people who aloha Hawaiʻi, and anyone interested in learning about Hawaiian culture with curiosity and respect.
