Join us to plant 3,300 native trees!

Trees That Count and Bupa Foundation are partnering with Hamilton City Council to plant native trees at Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park: a 65.5ha flagship project and focal point for biodiversity in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton). This science-based and community-led project represents the vision of bringing back Hamilton’s native flora and fauna.

The former dairy farm, located opposite Hamilton Zoo, was purchased by Hamilton City Council in 1997 and established as WNHP in 2004, with the long-term aim of reconstructing the forest, wetland and lake ecosystems present in the Hamilton Basin pre-European times. After 15 years of dedicated development, WNHP officially opened to the public in November 2019.

This transformation is the result of more than a decade of planting and ecological restoration work by dedicated volunteers, key stakeholders and the community. With almost half of the park now planted, it has already developed into the largest patch of indigenous vegetation in Hamilton City.

Restoring and increasing the native environment within the city is essential to achieve self-sustaining natural habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity for native flora and fauna as well as the community’s physical, mental and social wellbeing. Now surrounded by new subdivisions being built in what was farmland, Waiwhakareke is set to become a green and natural oasis in an urbanised environment.

The planting will take place in open fields. The fields are fairly flat, and can be driven near to, and could possibly be accessible to wheelchairs with some help. Parking will be along Baverstock Road, the planting site is a short walk away.

Hamilton City Council can provide tools but if you prefer, please bring your own spade or gloves along with you. It is also recommended to wear long pants and sleeves to protect you from scratchy and irritating plants. Please also wear sturdy footwear (hiking or work boots are great) plus a hat and rain jacket. We will provide lunch after the event, please bring drinking water with you in reusable water bottles and any snacks you might like for the morning.
