This course will guide you through the fundamentals of hand-building, from basic forms to functional pieces. You will explore various materials, tools, and decoration methods, gaining a comprehensive understanding of ceramics, as well as techniques for creating functional and artistic pottery pieces.

By the end of the 8 weeks, you will have a deeper understanding of the process of ceramics and the skills to glaze your creations.

Course Overview

Weeks 1–3: The Fundamentals

Learn the three core hand-building techniques. Here, we focus on process rather than outcome. You will receive curated resource guides, outlining pottery basics, clay tools and studio information.

Weeks 4–7: Studio Time

Bring your imagination to life. With dedicated mentor support, and utilising the skills you have learned, you will spend these weeks designing and building your own unique pieces.

Week 8: The Finishing Touch

You will receive a complete introduction to the glazing process to add colour, texture, and life to your creations.

This course includes a complimentary block of clay.

• Thursday 9:30am-11:30am;

• Thursday 1:00pm-3:00pm;

• Thursday 6:00pm-8:00pm.

Handbuilding Term 1 commences from 4 February 2027 and ends 26 March 2027.

About: The Cooroy Butter Factory Pottery Studio is a community space for potters of all skill levels. It is well equipped with pottery wheels, a slab roller, an extruder, kilns and plenty of workspace. Work solo at your own pace, or join a class.
