Event description

Join the Woodworkers Club of Houston, and learn how to assemble and decorate a handmade toy car. Participants will learn how to use a jig and hammer to assemble the cars and then decorate them using decals and colored Sharpies. Prior to the activity, the WCH will be busy prepping the toys by tracing each car pattern on wood, cutting it out with a band saw, drilling holes for the windows and wheel axels, routing it, and sanding it on a belt sander. Test your completed vehicle on a ramp and race your friends!

The Woodworkers Club of Houston is comprised of 200 members who make and donate about 5,000 toys annually to charities around Houston.

Note: This activity will take place outdoors and is on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist or guild demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Community members of all ages are welcome to come any time between 11 AM and 3 PM and participate in a 15 – 20-minute activity. Materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product, and history of craft. Learn more here.

Founded in 2001, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to advancing education about the process, product and history of craft. The Center’s major emphasis is on objects of art made primarily from craft materials: clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood or found/recycled materials.

HCCC serves as a treasured resource in the Houston arts community and the region by showcasing exhibitions that span a diversity of artists and concepts, introducing visitors of all ages to contemporary craft through a variety of educational programming and events, and supporting the development of working artists through its artist residency program.

HCCC showcases the best in contemporary craft in a welcoming environment that invites you to stay for a while or drop in often. We hope that you’ll visit, follow us online, and become a supporter. Free Docent-led tours are available for groups, if scheduled in advance.

Contemporary craft connects makers, materials, and methods to create art that shapes communities and enriches daily life. Traditionally, the craft community placed great value on the functional object and classified those objects by material–in particular, clay, fiber, glass, metal, and wood. However, craft today embraces skilled individuals who experiment with many materials and methods. Makers challenge the ways in which we think about objects and how we connect lo each other through object making, providing an outlet for us lo express ideas, emotions, and define who we are.
