HANTU

Hantu is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist Isobel D’Cruz. Drawing on D’Cruz’s Western and Indian classical training and Malaysian background, Hantu's recorded output comprises field recordings, flute, bass, zither and synths. Her live show is brought to life with core band members Rama Parwata (percussion, suling), Genevieve Fry (harp, tenor recorder), Zachary Schneider (guitar, synth) and Tom Flenady (double bass) with D’Cruz leading the ensemble on flute.

lotus threads

lotus threads is a collaborative poetry and music project by Panda Wong and Hannah Wu, both artists based across Wurundjeri and Bunurong land. They are interested in how collaboration and exploration are interlinked; and can generate other possibilities for togetherness. Working across poetry, music, performance and digital spaces, Panda’s practice explores grief’s transformative nature on life and language. Hannah Wu constructs spectral ambient worlds where the past and future collide in motion; intimate vocals flutter over shapeshifting beats, scaffolded by oscillating synths and glistening strings.

Atsuko Hatano + Joe Talia + James GIlligan

Working together since 2016, Atsuko Hatano and Joe Talia have been key members of the Tokyo music scene. Alongside their work in bands led by Jim O’Rourke and Eiko Ishibashi they have regularly performed as a tio with artist such as Tatsuhisa Yamamoto and Keijo Haino. In 2022 when by chance Joe and another long-time collaborator, James Gilligan were both in Tokyo this trio was formed, with James joining on pedal steel. The trio’s debut performance in Tokyo has now become a yearly tradition with this show marking their first performance outside of Japan.

Atsuko Hatano

Atsuko Hatano is experimental string player, composer, based in Tokyo. She plays constructs innovative multi-layered electronica, mainly using a 5-string viola, pedals and Max/MSP. The concept of 'Palpable Music' is the pursuit of new musical possibilities. She collaborated and performs live with SATOKO FUJII, MIDORI HIRANO, GIOVANNI DI DOMENICO, TETUZI AKIYAMA, KEN IKEDA, JOE TALIA, JIM O’ROURKE and more. She has released Cells#5 and Cells#2 (Important Records), as TRIOLA has just released Scapegoat in 2023 (Constructive).

Joe Talia

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Joe Talia is an improviser and composer who works with percussion, tape and electronics. Focussing on the use of Revox tape machine and analogue synthesizers in combination with instruments and field recordings, Talia’s electronic works patiently build up sparkling, detail-rich sound worlds of gliding tones, skittering percussion and burbling location atmospherics. In live situations, Talia often uses tape and effects to process and warp his own and others’ playing into uncanny chains of echoes and spectral smears of sound.

A virtuoso drummer, as a percussionist Talia emerges from the traditions of jazz and free improvisation and has developed a unique personal language of shifting accents, subtle virtuosity and discreet extended technique that he welds equally ably in jazz, rock, new music and improvisational contexts. Like his electronic works, his drumming often demonstrates a keen attention to long-form structures, dynamic development and group interactions.

An important member of Tokyo’s vibrant improvised music scene and internationally active as a performer, Talia performs and records regularly with Oren Ambarchi, Eiko Ishibashi, Jim O’Rourke, James Rushford and Tatsuhisa Yamamoto. In addition to these regular collaborations, he has also been involved in projects with Keiji Haino, Chris Abrahams, Tetuzi Akiyama, Akira Sakata, John Duncan, Richard Pinhas and many others. His work has been published by international labels such as Black Truffle, Bocian, Kye and Touch.

James Gilligan

James Gilligan is a multifaceted musician known for his mastery of the bass guitar, pedal steel guitar, and fiddle, as well as his bold prowess as a music producer and improviser. James has carved a unique voice amongst his peers. At the forefront of his creative endeavors is his solo project, Inlove Online where James explores the depths of his lyricism, bending genres and stretching his artistic comforts. Additionally, he leads the band Tambourine Jesus, infused with high energy performances and their unique approach to songwriting.

One of James's standout achievements is his role as producer and performer on the acclaimed all-star album, 'The Lost Horse Saloon - One Night Only.' His contributions to this project showcase his prowess as both producer and performer, earning him recognition for his multifaceted skills.

James's collaborative spirit has led him to record and perform with a diverse array of artists, including Beth Orton, Paul Kelly, Angus & Julia Stone, The Teskey Brothers, Emma Donovan, Joe Talia, Baby Velvet, Freya Josephine-Hollick, Stephen Magnusson, Clio Renner, Hannah Cameron, Lightly Toasted, and Romanie, among others. Through these collaborations, he has left an indelible mark on each project, enriching the music with his unique perspective and unique instrumental approach. James’ performances resonate with authenticity and passion, leaving a lasting impression on his listeners. His stage presence and deep listening are instantly contagious, and audiences are swept into a fascinating place of exploration and musical depth.

ACCESSIBILITY Eastmint is accessible via wheelchair through the non main entrance, there is a small sliding door frame that we can place a ramp over the top of. Please get in touch if you require this option. We regret we are unable to provide accessible toilet facilities at this time, although there is wheelchair access to the hand washing sink which is a private space. Closest accessible toilets located at the Peacock Hotel 150m away. There are no windows that are openable in the space but we will open the double doors between sets for airflow. The space is quite cavernous with high ceilings and is an un-renovated warehouse so not tightly sealed. We do not have our own HEPA filter but try to source one for gigs when we can.
