    Harakeke - Table mats & arrangements

    Do you want to learn how to weave with harakeke (flax)? 

    Make something cool for your table at home?

    This one-day workshop at Hakatere Marae will be facilitated by Harakeke weaver Vicky King and cover an introduction to harakeke, harvesting and preparing it for weaving, also tikanga. Once preparation of the flax is complete participants will weave a tablemat and putiputi (flowers) to create a centrepiece for a table. 

    There are only 12 places available (adults only) so get in quick to secure your place. No prior experience needed. 

    Harakeke will be provided. You will need to BYO lunch and bring the following items if you can:

    • A piece of driftwood or similar to use as your table centre piece
    • Craft knife
    • Scissors
    • Bobby pins  (about 50)
    • A large darning needle
    • A pin frog (if you have one)
    • Wooden chopping board
    • A blanket or small tarp if you wish to sit on the floor to work.
    • any shells, paua pieces etc. that you may wish to add to the driftwood and flowers centrepiece

    This event is organised by Te Huka Tai Trust and is open to anyone of any culture & gender, 16 years and over. The Harakeke Wānanga has been made possible thanks to funding from Lotteries.
