Every year, in the off season, the locals down the shore trade bennys for birds. The inlets and shores become refuges for waterfowl who migrate from the high arctic to escape winter’s icy grip.
The Harlequin duck is one such species. These regal birds wait out the winter in the Barnegat inlet under the warm light of Old Barney. Gavin Wild invites you on the Harlequin holiday to experience one of the Jersey shore’s lesser known visitors. You’ll observe them foraging for fish and crustaceans amongst the jetty rocks, float and bob in the wake, and decorate the shore with wild elegance.
