What is Rapeh?

Rapeh is a very sacred master plant teacher, made and used by the indigenous tribes of the Amazon for thousands of years. It is a preparation of powdered herbs, ash and the main component (in most) is tobacco (Mopacho/Nicotiana Rustica)  – that the natives blow through the nose, either with a small V-shaped self applicator, or with the help of an experienced practitioner or shaman to administer. It is known by many names.  Called Hapeh (pronounced ha-PAY) in Brazil and Rapeh (pronounced ra-PAY) in the majority of South America.

Effects of Rapeh?

Once the snuff is administered through the nose, the constituents attach to nicotine receptors, resulting in increased production of dopamine, acetylcholine, and epinephrine. These chemical processes cause the person to feel relaxed and calm, yet aware and alert. It happens quickly and often feels like a jolt, yet it typically doesn’t cause anxiety or fear. People may experience crying, extra salivation, sneezing, vomiting, or the need to have a bowel movement. This is normal and part of the process as one of the purposes of Rapeh is to cleanse and purify the mind and body.

Rapeh brings you to a place of acute attention and awareness. The mind becomes quieter, negativity clears our, and emotional tensions release. People often feel more grounded during the experience, allowing them to clear up confusions or discomfort about an issue they may have been experiencing. If you focus on the intention you set, you may easily find what you were looking for, be it a state of consciousness or an answer to a question. When your mind gets purged of everything it needs to let go of, the body often follows suit.

Participants may experience:

  • Heightened awareness
  • Spiritual cleansing and purification
  • Expanded consciousness
  • Spiritual grounding
  • Heightened connection to other spiritual practices
  • Connection to ancestral wisdom

Sound

Sound healing therapy helps to restore harmony and balance to the body’s biological rhythms and processes, re-establishing correct functioning of the Endocrine system (the glands) which releases powerful healing hormones such as endorphins, serotonin and melatonin into the body. Other natural chemicals are also released, such as nitric oxide, vital for the body’s health and vitality.

The vibrations from the instruments work on the vagus nerve which is connected to the middle ear and flows down to all of our major organs, it is the conductor of our parasympathetic nervous system and when this part of our nervous system is activated is when we feel relaxed and the body restores itself. As well as physical benefits, sound can help us emotionally and energetically.

Sound will be used throughout the ceremony in different formats (instruments, singing, music) to support and hold the work being done with the Rapeh.
