Event description

SCREENING: HAWKE

if you don't see it, you're a bum.

After a successful run at Chapel Off Chapel in Melbourne, HAWKE - a film of this stage play - will screen in Canberra at Dendy “Cinema 6”, Level 2, North Quarter of the Canberra Centre, at 4:00 pm on Friday 12 December.

Merryl Streep showed us the whole Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Peter Houghton shows us the complete Bob Hawke.

The Producer is generously donating all proceeds (after the hire of the Cinema) from ticket sales to The Mill Theatre at Dairy Road, supporting its exceptional work with Canberra’s actors, singers, and directors.

Please note that all tickets must be booked through this site and no tickets are available to purchase onsite at Dendy.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Australia’s prime minister Hawke, won four consecutive elections and gained the highest popularity rating of any prime minister since the introduction of public opinion polls.

His enormous success was however founded on a monstrous act.

After his death in 2019, Hawke meets his two wives, and a bishop with an even darker past. In just 80-minutes their eternal fate will be sealed in either Heaven or in Hell.

Starring some of Australia’s best actors, Peter Houghton as Hawke, Ana Mitsikas (first wife), Chelsea Plumley (second wife) and Mike Bishop (the bishop), plus original music and songs by cellist David Pereira performed by Dr Edward Neeman (piano) and Zachary Connor (cello).

Written by P. Kauffman and Denny Lawrence.

REVIEWS

“The singing and songs were immaculate. The performances rock solid. What sticks in my mind is the situation of Hazel and Blanche together in this situation both loving their Hawkes, grudgingly realising that fact in each other and facing the dilemma of the burden of being his potential judges for all time.”

Review by Ian Scott Film Actor October 2025.

“A world-first production explores the life of Bob Hawke in song and drama, blending political history with myth, emotion, and a unique Greek baptism hymn."

Review by Fotis Kapetopoulos in Neas Kosmos October 2025.
