Canberra - get ready to pay your respekts to DnB pioneer and original Junglist Kenny Ken.
Kenny Ken has torn apart more dance floors than most ravers have had hot showers. Starting his DJing career in 1989, he started out playing at Labyrinth in East London and then Crazy Larry’s - a regular early Sunday morning rave which he was first attending as a punter before transitioning to become a serious weapon behind the decks. From there he scored residency alongside Ray Keith and Jumping Jack Frost at the Crazy Club. Back then Jungle was in its infancy - it was called Hardcore and Jungle Techno, which is what we now call breakbeat hardcore, a collection of Amen breaks superimposed over the 4 to the floor kick. Kenny Ken has been there from the beginning back when Jungle and Drum and Bass were invented.
The Jungle sound evolved to syncopated kicks and bass sweeps and Kenny Ken was pioneering this sound throughout the London rave scene - representing these breaks at AWOL, World Dance, Sunday Roast and driving the emerging scene forward. In 1994 - Jungle was now in full flight and Kenny Ken represented at the first ever Jungle Sound Clash and was crowned the inaugural champion. He is absolute fucking royalty and a don to whom we have eternal gratitude for the creation of the sound and sharing the music we love.
For over 30 years Kenny Ken has been an ambassador for Jungle music and he is universally respected in the game. The mixtape scene of the 90’s introduced Jungle and DnB to the world with travellers duping tapes after trips to London and then sharing them back home. This lead to Kenny Ken being globally recognised as his mixtapes were widely distributed throughout the underground rave scene. The rest is history - and Kenny Ken has been touring internationally and tearing up the dance ever since.
We are stoked for midweek shenanigans on the Anzac Day Public Holiday. Keen for an arvo into evening sesh - so those who have made the unfortunate decision not to take the Friday off can still back it up the following day…. And for those who took advantage it represents the perfect entry to a 4 day weekend!!
