Healing our Mangrove - Community Open Day | Saturday 30th Nov 2024

Join us for an inspiring and educational day as we explore the vital role mangroves play in our environment and the ongoing restoration efforts led by the Ngiyambandigay Wajaarr Aboriginal Corporation (NWAC) in partnership with Southern Cross University. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the significance of mangroves in maintaining coastal ecosystems, their role in protecting biodiversity, and how you can get involved in future rehabilitation efforts. We'll also be taking small groups out in canoes to see the mangrove restoration site. 

What to Expect:

1) Introduction to Mangroves & Ecosystem Health:
Learn about the unique characteristics of mangrove forests and their importance in preserving coastal ecosystems. Find out how these incredible plants help stabilise shorelines, provide wildlife habitats, and sequester carbon to mitigate climate change.

2) Boambee Creek Mangrove Restoration Project Overview:
Hear directly from the team at NWAC and Southern Cross University about the mangrove restoration initiatives taking place in our local area. Learn about the techniques, challenges, and successes of the project, and the collaborative work between traditional knowledge and scientific research. Engage directly with the restoration project leaders, ecologists, and community organisers. Have your questions answered, and share your ideas about how the community can take action to protect and restore mangrove habitats.
Experience the rich cultural connection the local Aboriginal community has with the land and sea. Discover how the Ngiyambandigay Wajaarr Aboriginal Corporation is blending traditional knowledge with modern restoration practices to regenerate and protect our coastal ecosystems.

3) Community Involvement Opportunities:
Find out how YOU can be part of this important restoration effort! Whether you are a local resident, student, or environmental advocate, there will be opportunities for everyone to get involved in future planting events, monitoring efforts, and educational programs.  Participants are guided in small groups via canoe out to the restoration site while learning more about the project and the team's future plans. 

4) Refreshments and Family Fun:
Enjoy a BBQ lunch in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. There will be activities for children and a chance to meet other like-minded community members who are passionate about caring for the country and environmental conservation.
