Event description

Heart Foundation’s National Stakeholder Forum on Obesity and CVD

Obesity prevalence has more than doubled globally in the past four decades, now affecting over a billion people. Obesity significantly contributes to impaired quality of life and reduced life expectancy—two-thirds of which is attributable to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Based on the increasing burden of this overlapping clinical area, a joint discussion on what is needed to improve cardiovascular outcomes in obesity is necessary.

We are bringing together key stakeholders from across the sector for a national discussion on improving outcomes in obesity and CVD.

You are invited to be a valued participant of this Forum. Your expertise and support will help us identify collective priorities in improving the assessment and management of obesity within the context of cardiovascular health. It will also help inform the Heart Foundation’s upcoming Clinical Consensus Statement on Obesity & CVD.

The Forum aims to gather broad input, enhance our understanding of your community and clinical needs, and prioritise our collective initiatives.

Join us for a series of insightful and interactive sessions including:

  • Latest updates from the World Heart Federation on obesity

  • Multidisciplinary panel on the complex drivers of obesity

  • New and emerging weight loss medicines and their impact on cardiovascular outcomes

  • Interactive sessions to shape priority solutions and inform the clinical consensus statement

Date: Thursday, 24th July 2025

Time: 10:00 am–4:30 pm (Forum to commence at 10:30 am)

Background

Obesity prevalence has more than doubled globally in the past four decades, now affecting over a billion people. In Australia, two-thirds of adults live with overweight or obesity, significantly increasing their risk of CVD, including heart attacks, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Despite its strong links to CVD, obesity remains under-recognised as a modifiable risk factor.

With new treatments, emerging evidence, and growing recognition of obesity as a chronic condition, there is a critical need for a joint discussion on what is needed to improve cardiovascular outcomes in obesity.

Objectives

  1. Gather insights to inform the Heart Foundation’s upcoming Clinical Consensus Statement on Obesity and CVD

  2. Engage a broad range of stakeholders to help shape priority solutions to address the growing issue of obesity and CVD

  3. Understand the needs of our community and stakeholder ecosystem in this area, especially as they relate to clinical needs

  4. Prioritise stakeholder-led initiatives to improve cardiovascular outcomes in obesity over the next five years

Should you have further questions about the Forum, please contact the organising team via obesityandcvd@heartfoundation.org.au

I look forward to seeing you there.

David Lloyd
