    Event description

    HELIOS by Wright & Grainger

**EARLY BIRD TICKETS GET A FREE BRODBURGER**Available for bookings before midnight 8 March

A lad lives half-way up a historic hill

A teenager is on a road trip to the city in a stolen car

A boy is driving a chariot, pulling the sun across the sky

The winner of Summerhall’s Lustrum Award at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe is coming to Australia with their latest show. A story about the son of the god of the sun, HELIOS transplants the Ancient Greek tale into a modern-day myth wound round the winding roads of rural England and into the everyday living of a towering city. A story about life, and about the invisible monuments we build to it.

An intimate tale made to be told in smaller rooms, HELIOS is a collective experience which invites the audience to be part of the story. Told by a single storyteller, with a cinematic score, HELIOS asks us to invest in the micro and the macro - the power of the sun, and the power of the small things which we carve our lives out of. It’s a story about growing up, about the pride of young boys, and how we define our worlds. Written & told by Alexander Wright with music by Phil Grainger, the creators of the internationally award-winning THE GODS THE GODS THE GODS will come to the Mill Theatre as part of the co-production series.

Duration: 70 minutes with no interval.

    Audience suitability: course language.

      ABOUT WRIGHT&GRAINGER

Alexander Wright & Phil Grainger have been making theatre together since 2016’s ORPHEUS, which has now played well over 500 shows across three continents. They have won multiple awards, toured the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Bali and transferred their work off-broadway in New York. Their recent tour of THE GODS THE GODS THE GODS took in main houses in the UK including York Theatre Royal, Storyhouse in Chester, Norwich Playhouse and SlungLow in Leeds as well as touring rurally in England, Wales and Scotland.

At the beginning of 2023 they toured across Australia and New Zealand for four months playing Festivals, Gig Venues and Theatres including Festival Of Colour in New Zealand, Brunswick Ballroom in Melbourne, Brunswick Picture House in northern New South Wales and three packed shows at Sydney Opera House.

Still based in North Yorkshire where they live five minutes down the road from one another, Al & Phil have been playing gigs together since they were 14, and plan on doing it for a good few years more yet!

      ABOUT DIONYSUS

Dionysus makes cultural programs for meaningful places.

We practise cultural theory with thousands of events and integrated ideas. Our work from philosophy through project management, the arts and communications helps to shape a unique cultural landscape in Canberra.

We think place activation is soulless without activating values – things people care to celebrate, habitually or ritually.

The information below goes into a lot of detail but if you have further questions, please email us at hello@milltheatreatdairyroad.com. A small team can see that inbox and we respond very quickly during show times. The Mill is a very quirky space and we want to welcome you!

      SEATING & ACCESS

      • All tickets are general admission and no seats are reserved so the earlier you arrive, the better position you will have.
      • Seating is in an L-shape to create a dynamic and intimate playing space.
      • The venue is fully accessible for wheelchairs with a ramp from the P3 parking spot and same level access from entry into building 3.3 into the theatre all the way to the accessible seating positions inside the Mill. We have two wheelchair seating positions both with very different views. Please contact us at hello@milltheatreatdairyroad.com so we can talk through the options, including adding companion card tickets. One option is on the short side, the other option is on the long side. All accessible bookings will be reserved.
      • Every seat in the house has a great view, and a different view. Patrons walk through the set to find your seats, adding to the intimacy of the space. This means late arrivals will NOT BE ADMITTED TO THE THEATRE.

      ARRIVAL & PROTOCOLS

      ENTERING

      • Please head to the Box Office on arrival. If you have already purchased a ticket, the Front of House team checks off the name of every booked attendee. If you haven’t purchased a ticket, you can get one onsite an hour before show time.
      • The doors open approximately 15 minutes before show time. The Front of House team will let you know when you can enter.
      • Please do not attend if you are experiencing any of the following: fever; flu-like symptoms such as coughing, sore throat and fatigue; shortness of breath or have been in contact with a person with a confirmed case of coronavirus.

      LOCK OUT

      • Due to the unique layout of the venue, the audience walks through the stage to take their seats. This means we cannot accommodate anyone slipping in late for the beginning of the show.
      • The Front of House team rings a bell and counts the audience to ensure you won’t miss out but please don’t tempt fate otherwise you will be locked out and we cannot let you in.

      LOCATION

The Mill Theatre is in Building 3.3, the Screencraft and KeepCo building which is a short walk from Capital Brewing. There are two easy ways to approach the Theatre:

PARK in P3 at the back of the precinct. From there you will see building 3.3 which has a large Screencraft sign. The public entrance is just up from that sign (not underneath it!). Once inside, walk about 5 metres and the theatre is to the right, next to Mojo Guitars.

WALK from Capital Brewing or the Less sculpture into the KeepCo building, pass Ramen Daddy and at the end of the corridor we are on the left.

      PARKING

All parking in the precinct is free with several accessible parking spots in all the parking locations. The best spot to park is P3 at the back of the precinct. If you park elsewhere please be warned that signage and way-finding around the precinct is extremely difficult. Arrive in plenty of time to possibly get lost, possibly be in a bad mood, and remedy that with a drink at the new Mill Bar before enjoying a smashing show!
