Join us for a groundbreaking professional development weekend designed for counselors, social workers, educators, nurses, and other helping professionals who serve with heart and lead with humanity.
Experience 12 hours of engaging lecture and instruction, with workshops lead by two doctoral-level educators whose work is redefining what ethical, equitable care look, and sounds, like through workshops.
Day One:
Led by Jacqui Filbeck with research presented by Dr. Holliday, a nationally recognized sociophonetician and university researcher, this session dives into how language, voice, and identity shape care and reinforce bias — especially in rural communities.
Day Two:
Featuring a workshop by clinical psychologist who’s taken social media by storm, known for her down-to-earth, thought-provoking approach that challenges therapists to deconstruct the clinical self and rebuild from authenticity, ethics, and empathy. Lecture lead by Jacquline Filbeck, LCSW.
Together, these two days will expand your understanding of the ethics of language, the art of listening, and the heart of care in every community — even (and especially) where resources are scarce, and stories run deep.

Content Summary
The Language of Helping is a live, interactive educational program tailored to professional counselors, mental health, education, and medical helping professionals. It is designed to advance participants’ competency in therapeutic communication, applying evidence based techniques in a clinically sound framework. The educational event includes workshops that offer hands on engagement, that explores clinical and ethical considerations, limitations, and dilemmas within language and use of biased language.
CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

Sociolinguistic influences on communication
Cultural humility and linguistic identity
Bias recognition and reduction
Translational research
Clinical application and skill building
Ethical decision‑making in real‑world scenarios
Objectives
Analyze ethical challenges related to dialect, intonation, and identity in psychology.
Identify implicit & explicit language biases that may compromise ethical care and clinical decision making
Apply principles of cultural humility as an ethical standard/expectation to reduce harm & ensure equitable treatment.
Integrate sociolinguistic insight into ethical decision making frameworks consistent with professional codes of conduct.
Identify & apply helping centered language strategies that foster psychological safety, trust, and student/client/patient engagement within classroom/school settings, therapy offices, medical offices & hospitals.
Demonstrate trauma informed communication techniques & practices that de-escalate distress, reduce conflict/resistance to services & support
Analyze common professional & patient (includes student, clients, etc.) interactions to distinguish between deficit & strength/change based language on change/learning/health outcomes.
Apply ethical & professional boundaries when using professional helping language, recognizing the limits of the professional role while appropriately supporting patients (& all other helping professionals) social emotional needs.
Develop a personalized action plan for implementing helping language & strategies in daily behavior/classroom management, instructional feedback (reframes & redirection/cognitive restructuring/reframing etc), & with colleagues & caregivers
