Event description

Hetty Kate Quartet (Paris Based)

Popular jazz vocalist Hetty Kate was born in England, raised in Australia (Melbourne) and is now based in France. After a successful tour in 2022, her first since 2019, she is delighted to be back home in Australia for an Autumn tour, and to be performing a special concert for us at The Citadel.

"A stage presence only matched by the clarity of her voice." James Morrison (AU)

One of the most difficult things about being based internationally is being far away from musicians you love and admire. So it's a treat that Hetty will be joined by her long time friend, guitar legend Ian Date, double-bassist Nicki Parrott and drummer Dave Sanders for this concert. Both Ian and Nicki have recently returned to live in Australia after spending many years overseas in Ireland and New York respectively. All three are celebrated musicians and composers in their own right, and you can be sure this quartet will create a special magic when they play together.

"Hetty Kate's voice overflows with a natural musicality." Richard Fields 3CR Radio (AU)

Share a warm Thursday evening with us and enjoy sparkling classics and curiosities from pages of the Great American Songbook, treasures from Hetty's recent album releases and stories from Paris. Not to be missed!

About Hetty Kate

Vocalist Hetty Kate, described as “the real deal” and “one of the best swing vocalists on the current scene” (Will Friedwald - Author & Jazz Critic USA), was born in England, raised in Melbourne, and has been based in Paris since 2017. With a career spanning more than a decade Hetty toured for many years with acclaimed Australian musician James Morrison, and can now be found performing on stages large and small from New Zealand to New York. With her clear, pure tone and improvisation that never takes away from the story of the song, Hetty really swings; and has often been compared to Stacey Kent, Doris Day or a young Ella Fitzgerald. It's this quality, alongside her great love of the American Songbook that draws in audiences and musicians alike.

Hetty has performed at many premier jazz festivals including the New York Winter Jazz Festival (USA), Sapporo International Jazz Festival (Japan), Ascona Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Prague Proms (Czech Republic) and the Cavell Leitch International Jazz Festival (NZ) as well as many others across Europe, Asia and Australia. Her last album "Under Paris Skies" was released in 2019, and she released a four track EP 'Valentines' in February 2023. Performance highlights include performing with eight symphonic orchestras, treading the boards as Ava Gardner in an original Australian stage production 'Ava at the End of the World' and appearing on both Australian and French TV.
