Event description

Hey Cuzzin – National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration!

Join us on June 20, 2025, for Hey Cuzzin — the 4th annual free community breakfast and celebration in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day. This vibrant event brings together community, culture, and creativity through Ceremony, food, art, movement and live performances. All of this is happening on Treaty 1 Territory at Broadway Neighbourhood Centre 185 Young St. Winnipeg, Manitoba 9 am – 12 pm.

In May 2022, four organizations united in the spirit of collaboration came together to host a celebration for National Indigenous Peoples Day. The vision was clear: to create a welcoming, inclusive event where community could come together, have fun, and feel a true sense of belonging. We wanted everyone who attended to enjoy delicious food, live Indigenous music, and performances that honoured the rich cultures of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.

The event—Hey Cuzzin—was a joint initiative between two Indigenous organizations (Neecheewam: Healing Lodges for Manitoba’s Children and Blue Thunderbird Family Care) and two non-Indigenous organizations (Crisis & Trauma Resource Institute and Women’s Health Clinic). Together, we committed to covering all costs, ensuring the event remained free and accessible to all.

Rooted in mutual respect and shared responsibility, this collaboration represents reconciliation in action. The success of the first gathering inspired us to make Hey Cuzzin an annual tradition. What began with four founding partners has now grown to include thirteen.

We begin the day in a good way with Traditional drumming, an Opening Prayers and Pipe Ceremony.

Other Pipe Carriers are welcome to join Elders Albert McLeod, and Jocelyne Bourbonnais as they invite and welcome  Spirit to join the celebration.

Enjoy a free breakfast, served at 9:45 am while supplies last — first come, first served!

The celebration continues with a full lineup of excellent performers and activities:

Fiddling by Jason Appleyard
Inuit Throat Singing by Caramello Swan & Chasity Swan
Métis Jigging by L’il Bitty Steppers
Drag Performance by Artemyst
Hoop Dancing by Brian Clyne
Art Workshop by Art City
Skateboarding Demos & Lessons by Pitikwé Skate Park

The gathering ends with all participants invited to join together in a Friendship (Round) Dance. Please bring your own water bottles and chairs.

This event is collaboration between twelve community partners committed to celebrating Indigenous cultures, relationships, and joy. Come and join us!
