The Joy and Impact of Community Independents
Event description
This event is brought to you by Voices of Tasmania Inc, a new local pro-democracy group dedicated to improving and activating democratic participation and fostering the emergence of community minded independents in Tassie.
Helen Haines is the Federal Member for Indi and champion of the National Anti-Corruption Commission. Helen was first elected in 2019 as a Community Independent. She made history by being the first ever independent to successfully retain the seat from another independent, Cathy McGowan.
A key focus of Helen's involvement will be on the role Community Independents are playing to transform Australian politics.
Helen will be in conversation with Dr Kate Crowley, Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences at University of Tasmania. Kate is a frequent media commentator on Australian and Tasmanian politics and has written and researched extensively on minority governments.
After about 45 minutes of conversation between Kate and Helen there will be an opportunity for questions from participants. Questions must be pre-submitted and successful questioners will be notified and given a sequence number for when Kate will ask Helen your question.
Pre-submit questions by 6pm Thursday 21st September to michael@voicesfortasmania.org
