Event description
OCEAN LOVERS TALKS - HIGH SEAS, DEEP SEAS
Join marine scientist Professor Elain Baker, Captain of Sea Shepard Vessel "Bob Baker" Peter Hammarstedt, and Canadian Film Maker of the Documentary "Deep Rising" Mattheiu Rytz to find out who owns the seas and how we can combat the over-exploitation with policy-making and enforcement.Â
Hosted by Natasha Mitchell of ABC Big Ideas Are the high seas still a wild frontier? Greed versus Need - What about the next battleground of who owns, governs, and can exploit the Deep Seas? What do we even know about this truly massive unexplored part of our planet? Our expert panelists will explore for the audience the importance of the high and deep seas for all humanity and future generations and what is happening across the world right now.
A/Prof. Aline Jaeckel is an Associate Professor at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS). She works in the fields of ocean governance, international (environmental) law, and law of the sea. She is an internationally recognised expert in the regulation and governance of deep seabed mineral mining, which is the focus of her Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship. She acts as a government advisor and is also an Affiliate Scholar at the Research Centre for Sustainability (RIFS) - Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, Germany, where she has previously worked on a multidisciplinary project about environmental standards for deep seabed mining.
Captain Peter Hammarstedt, is the Director of Campaigns for Sea Shepherd and is Chairman of Sea Shepherd Australia. He captained the ocean-going vessel Bob Barker, having spent 20 years at sea including 10 years in Antarctica. In 2014/15, the Bob Barker, with Peter as captain, set the world record for the longest pursuit of a poaching vessel at sea after chasing the Interpol-wanted fishing vessel the Thunder for 110 days, covering three oceans and 11,000 nautical miles, before its captain intentionally sank his own vessel in a bid to destroy evidence. On-going partnerships between Sea Shepherd and the law enforcement agents of African coastal and island States have resulted in the arrest of 85 vessels for illegal fishing and other fisheries crimes over the past seven years.Â
Mattheiu Rytz is a producer, curator, photographer, and award-winning film director. His first documentary, Anote’s Ark, premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and has been globally acclaimed. Trained as a visual anthropologist, Rytz has a passion for storytelling that has led him across the globe to witness and document complex human and environmental stories.
