HINA: Harakeke Weaving Workshop
Event description
HINA: Harakeke Weaving Workshop
Explore the art of harakeke weaving with local weaver Briar Moffat in this free workshop. Create stunning sculptural forms in a hands-on session designed for all skill levels.
We will create flowing sculptural pieces that talk to the way that nature drapes the whenua with a korowai of ngahere that flows as needed and envelopes the land. Like the flow and weave of music and dance, these woven pieces will talk to the restoration of the whenua at the Te Hakari wetlands, and the release and change of tension when the land is enabled to return to how she wants to be, where a new future can be created.
All materials provided. Spaces are limited so registration is essential.
Briar Moffat:

He korowai ata raranga, He korowai whakamana, Mō tātau kātoa
A carefully woven cloak, Is an empowering cloak, For all of us.
This whakataukī wraps together some of my favourite things - Weaving and Healing. When our natural world is held with reverence, and our own personal purpose uncovered, we can each lead our most empowered life. Therefore contributing to creating holistically healthy communities. For me, the action of weaving brings together the non tangible aspects of living a meaningful life, in a really tactile way. It becomes obvious that it takes many threads to create a whole piece, like the focus on holistic health. And we can see how important tension is. Too little and its open, too much and the weave tightens up. When done intentionally stunning pieces can be made. If not intentional, it’s hard to know what the outcome will look like. Much aligned to a life lived by design, or at the whims of the world around us.
This workshop is part of HINA. HINA blends dance, film, music, weaving, mātauranga Māori and environmental science to highlight the connection between land and women and share the importance of being kaitiaki of our environment.
