HINA: Pā Harakeke Restoration Day
Join us for a hands-on learning experience at Te Hakari wetlands!
Te Rangianiwaniwa a te Harakeke research group invites you to discover the art of caring for our precious pā harakeke (native flax communities). This special day combines traditional knowledge with practical conservation work as we contribute to the ongoing Te Hakari wetland restoration project.
What you'll learn:
Traditional and contemporary methods of pā harakeke care
The vital role of harakeke in wetland ecosystems
How the Te Hakari restoration project is bringing this special place back to life
Hands-on techniques for maintaining healthy flax communities
Event Details:
When: Sunday 13 July at 10:00am
Where: Meet at the beach carpark on Kuku Beach Road
Duration: Morning event finishing with refreshments, we plan to be all done by 2pm
Come prepared for outdoor work and changeable weather! Bring warm clothing, rain jacket, hat, gumboots.
Refreshments provided, please bring your own water bottle.
Te Rangianiwaniwa a te Harakeke is a research group that brings together textile researchers, Māori practitioners, and scientists to advance knowledge of native plant dyes and fibres.
All skill levels welcome. To help with planning please register your attendance.
This workshop is part of HINA. HINA blends dance, film, music, weaving, mātauranga Māori and environmental science to highlight the connection between land and women and share the importance of being kaitiaki of our environment.
