    Event description

Sydney-based art-pop quintet, HINTERLANDT, are heading to Pigeon Lane @ Gallery ONE88 on Saturday, December 19th, for the Blue Mountains launch of their 4th studio album Seven Tales – an elegantly composed collection of acoustic indie-chamber anecdotes. 'Seven Tales' is a significant step forward for the band, as composer Jochen Gutsch adds a narrative and poetic element to the intricate and purely acoustic music Hinterlandt has been known for. Beautifully sung by Nicole Smede, the album combines emotive storytelling with progressive musical arrangements.

    HINTERLANDT

    Featuring:

Jochen Gutsch – Composition, Trumpet, Guitar, Percussion
    Simeon Johnson – Cello
    Monique Mezzatesta – Violin
    Lara Goodridge – Violin
    Nicole Smede – Vocals

As the fourth Hinterlandt record released under the 'Art As Catharsis' label, Seven Tales showcases Jochen Gutsch’s exceptional compositional talents. A quintet of classically trained instrumentalists shape the music with masterful violins, cello, guitar, trumpet, and vocals, bringing together such diverse influences as the moving storytelling of Grand Salvo, the compositional intricacies of Robert Fripp, and the fearless curiosity of John Zorn.

“The chamber-music style of the arrangements carries some dark subject matter in the lyrics,” begins Gutsch. “Listeners are introduced to fictional characters who experience tragic moments in which they are confronted with aspects of mortality. However, as a band, we aim to deliver these tales with glimpses of black humour, to provide a window into the lives of seven humans (and a dog).

On Seven Tales, Gutsch’s compositional talents are taken to new heights through the introduction of narrative, poetic and vocal elements. The band is thrust a significant step forward by these careful additions – the storytelling is engaging, clear, and rife with curiosity.

For lovers of narrative music, meticulous compositions, and unique instrumentation, this record brings a brilliant and refreshing twist on multiple fronts – a must-listen for anyone appreciating intricacy and detail.

    Album Review - ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

". . . Seven Tales does exactly what it says on the packet: each track introduces us to a character in the midst of their own rather tragic event . . .  By the time you reach The Tale of Zara you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped into a recitative from a Sondheim musical."

    THE EXPERIENCE

Whilst some venues saw COVID-19 restrictions as a challenge, Music in the Mountains and Pigeon Lane @ Gallery ONE88 saw this as an opportunity to create a truly VIP experience. No need to grab a meal on the way to the show - Pigeon Lane will be serving up something tasty and giving you time to savour every bite. Tickets will be sold in tables, meaning you can either have a romantic table for two or invite a couple of friends along and make your table a par-tay (and with easing restrictions, we will even be able to offer some single tickets - yay!). And just like every VIP show - it's exclusive . . . restrictions might be easing but the walls aren't getting any bigger. This will be a small intimate show offering you the experience to almost reach out and touch the musicians (well, not quite . . . it's still COVID 😉)
