Loan our handheld pekapeka bat detectors and discover the sound of bats in your neighbourhood!
These handheld detectors are fun for all ages. Switch them on, tune in to 'bat frequency' and wait to hear the night calls of the elusive long tailed pekapeka bat. The handheld detectors work by picking up the ultrasonic frequency and stepping it down to a frequency humans can hear. The result is a truly magical experience of our tāonga species of bat.
Hireage MUST be at least 24 hours prior to the current date. i.e. if you need the bat detectors on Saturday, you must place the hireage request by Friday latest.
A full set of instructions will be supplied.
Each booking is for 24 hours. If you need them for longer than 24 hours, then you'll need to book and pay for additional days.
FAQs
- How do I get the detectors?
You must pick them up from our offices at Level 1, 20 Alderman Drive, Henderson between the hours of 9am - 4pm. Then once your allocated loan time period ends, you drop them back to us. Email enviro@communitywaitakere.org.nz
- Who can borrow these?
At the moment, we are offering loans to pre-existing local conservation groups only. If that's not you, don't worry! Just look for your local group online and suggest that they loan them!
- How many can we borrow?
We have a total of 12 handheld detectors available. You can borrow between 1-12.
- How does booking work?
Just click "Book Now" and pick your date. You can book any day of the week. If you need them for longer than 24 hours, then you'll need to book and pay for additional days.
- Will you show me how to use them?
They are SO easy to use, trust us on that. To help, we have prepared a flyer and how-to guide for all loans. Since you'll be picking them up, if you need extra advice, you can ask to have a chat while you're here.
- Where are the bats?
In West Auckland, we often hear (and sometimes see) pekapeka out at Te Piringa Cascades Kauri. Check the Department of Conservation NZ Bat Observations Map for some of the previous locations bats have been found: Bat Observations Map
