Black teachers can transform what is possible in a school. School and district leaders help shape whether they are hired, supported, and able to stay.

Hiring & Sustaining Black Teachers is a three-hour interactive virtual workshop hosted by the Black Teacher Project for school and district leaders who understand why Black teachers matter and want to strengthen what they can do, from where they sit, to recruit, hire, and sustain them.

Across the country, education leaders are responsible for building strong school cultures, developing and retaining effective educators, making thoughtful staffing decisions, strengthening instruction, and creating learning environments where every student can thrive. That makes recruiting and sustaining Black teachers not simply an HR challenge, but a leadership one.

And the need is significant. Black teachers remain deeply underrepresented in the teaching workforce, while research continues to show that recruiting more Black teachers is only part of the work. Sustaining them also requires attention to the leadership, working conditions, professional support, and opportunities for growth that shape whether teachers can thrive and remain in the profession (Carver-Thomas et al., 2025).

The Hiring & Sustaining Black Teachers workshop moves beyond the question of why Black teachers matter to explore what leaders can actually do to help bring more Black educators into their schools and create the conditions for them to stay.

During the interactive three-hour session, participants will:

Explore the distinct work of recruiting, hiring, and sustaining Black teachers and why strong recruitment efforts must be matched by intentional retention practices.
Deepen their understanding of why every child deserves a Black teacher, connecting teacher representation to student experience, academic opportunity, and thriving school communities.
Examine the historical and present-day context of Black teachers’ work and how that context can inform more responsive leadership and decision-making.
Assess current practices through an equity lens, identifying opportunities within hiring, staff development, working conditions, school culture, and other areas leaders influence.
Reflect on their own sphere of leadership and influence and identify changes they can advance within their school, district, or team.
Thought partner with peers through facilitated breakout rooms and a consultancy protocol, receiving feedback on real questions and challenges from their own contexts.

School and district leaders have considerable influence over the everyday conditions in which teachers work, from hiring and professional learning to staff culture, resources, trust, and opportunities for growth. This workshop creates space to examine that influence alongside other education leaders, connect it to the experiences of Black teachers, and leave with a clearer understanding of where change is possible within your own role.

The Black Teacher Project's Hiring & Sustaining Black Teachers workshop will include facilitated learning, individual reflection, breakout conversations, peer consultation, and a scheduled break to support the flow of the experience. Resources shared during the workshop will be emailed to participants afterward to support continued reflection and application within their schools and districts.
