Hoe tū te waka: Ancient remedies for modern problems

During this interactive wānanga, participants will explore:

• how whenua, whakapapa and belonging shape wellbeing

• six Māori places and relationships through which healing may be encountered

• ways to apply these insights respectfully within counselling, pastoral care and community practice

• their own sources of identity, connection and restoration.

Throughout my life, both personally and professionally, I have become increasingly convinced that many of the remedies for our modern problems have been close to us all along. As Māori, we have long understood that healing and repair are not confined to a room, a programme or a particular technique. Healing is found in relationships, stories, identity, prayer, movement, silence, belonging, service, community and our relationships with the natural world. These sources of healing are interwoven, eternal and freeing!

The wisdom of our tūpuna reminds us that healing can be encountered through our relationships with te moana, te ngahere, māra kai, whenua, marae and urupā. 
These places are more than locations. They carry memory, connection, identity, responsibility and restoration.

Drawing upon mātauranga Māori, Christian faith, lived experience and more than twenty-five years in education and leadership, I invite participants into a shared space of reflection, conversation and discovery. This will not be a lecture. 
Rather, it will be an interactive wānanga in which every participant is invited to contribute their own wisdom, experience and questions.

My hope is that people leave feeling heard, seen and held dearly within a community of freedom, belonging, hope and the power to change.

This seminar is suitable for counsellors (1.5 bicultural CPD hours), allied health professionals, pastors and anyone working in the community.

About Ngāwaka:

Ngāwaka Salā Setiu is a Māori and Samoan educator, facilitator and founder of CareCNC (Care Cultural enCounters), based in Waimahana Bay in the Far North of Aotearoa New Zealand. For more than twenty-five years, he has worked alongside whānau, schools, churches, communities and organisations, exploring the relationships between identity, whakapapa, whenua, wairua, belonging and wellbeing. His work brings together mātauranga Māori, te reo Māori, Christian faith, education and lived experience to create spaces of healing, reflection and connection.
