the HOME Program: Story Dolls Theatre

A gentle storytelling performance for young children and families, featuring Rickeeta Walley and Lakshmi Kanchi.

Join us for Story Dolls Theatre, a beautiful and imaginative performance for young children and their families as part of the HOME Program. Aunty Geri will Welcome us to Country and open up for an hour of beautiful stories. Followed by playtime!

This special event features Rickeeta Walley and Lakshmi Kanchi, with story dolls made with Geri Hayden and creative facilitation/production by Rachel Riggs.

Using puppetry, play-based learning and simple storytelling, this performance has been developed through work with families making traditional Noongar dolls, acknowledging story from Noongar Boodjar and sharing stories from emerging communities and intergenerational learning.

Many of us have travelled here in many ways to call Australia home, and this performance celebrates our journeys, personal narratives, cultures, and the world of children’s play.

Performance time: Approximately 1 hour

Suitable audience: Young children and families

Price: $10 ea (Adults/Children)

Program format: Interactive storytelling performance with audience participation

What to expect:

• Welcome and introduction by Rachel

• First Nations story shared by Rickeeta Walley

• Emerging community story shared by Lakshmi Kanchi

• Play time with the story doll kit

• Facilitated family sharing of simple, short stories of journeys to Australia

• Closing with Rachel, Rickeeta and Lakshmi

Audience setup: Audience will be seated in a horse shoe/circle arrangement around the long-necked turtle design on the floor, on cushions and a circle of chairs.

Additional performance elements may include:

• A child-friendly map of the world displayed on screen

• Story titles in language and English

• Recorded music and sound effects, such as sea and aeroplane sounds, as needed

Special guests: Industry representatives and VIPs may be invited.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This is a family event and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Rickeeta Walley and Lakshmi Kanchi lead this storytelling performance, bringing together First Nations storytelling, emerging community narratives, and shared experiences of home, culture and belonging. Story dolls made with Geri Hayden support the performance, with creative facilitation and production by Rachel Riggs.
