Honouring Father Mountain and Mother Ocean

Tanya Taylor’s solo exhibition includes both Aboriginal contemporary and traditional art
styles with broad colour palettes from bright and bold through to earth tones. The exhibition showcases an extensive range of forest wood crafted into a variety of traditional tools such as fighting, walking and digging sticks. Tanya’s skill and technique in hand whittling wood was taught by her father whilst sharing his knowledge of traditional stories connected to the Rainbow Serpent Dreaming. Tanya’s childhood memories of living on the land and learning how to hunt with her dad and siblings influence her art. By 10, Tanya knew how to shoot and skin animals, prepare food and tan hides gather grubs as fishing bait, collect berries, freshwater mussels, honey from the bee’s hive and the beeswax. This exhibition captures the lived experience and cultural knowledge of a woman raised as a hunter and gatherer.
