Honouring Mabo Day: A Cultural Conversation with Alick Tipoti
Event description
Honouring Mabo Day: A Cultural Conversation with Alick Tipoti
Join us in honouring Mabo Day 2025 with a powerful artist talk by internationally acclaimed Torres Strait Islander artist Alick Tipoti.
Mabo Day commemorates the historic legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and the recognition of Indigenous land rights in Australia. This event offers a unique opportunity to hear from Tipoti, one of the Torres Strait’s most respected cultural leaders and fluent speaker of Kala Lagaw Ya.
Through stories of ancestry, island identity, environmental knowledge, and traditional choreography, Tipoti will reflect on his deep connections to Badhu/Mabuyag and Saibai Islands, and how these shape his visual and performance art. His work serves not only as creative expression, but as cultural preservation, resistance, and revival.
This event is presented in collaboration between the University of Sydney Library and Indigenous Employment and Engagement.
Light afternoon tea will follow the talk.
Please note this is a staff event only.
