Join us to learn the art of making a basket drey "an artificial house for ringtails'. Why not make your own basket drey" It's a fun and inexpensive activity for possum lovers of all ages. You can hang the drey in your own backyard, or if you have no use for it, carers would be very happy to use the dreys.
In the wild ringtail possums make their own nest known as a drey. We currently use possum boxes for hand-raised ringtails, however, they can also be released in a make-shift nest (an artificial drey).
Fauna Rescue SA's Possum Team ae as busy as every, not just rescuing, reuniting, rehabilitating and releasing possums, but also making ringtail possum dreys. Possums are tree dwelling animals that are active at night. In the wild, a ringtail possum will sleep during the day in a 'drey' they have made out of sticks, leaves and bark.
Habitat loss means possums are also experiencing their own kind of 'housing crisis'. This makes it difficult for our carers to release possums back into the wild, and may sometimes also result in possums looking for alternative accommodation in roofs or other locations where it is safe and dark. Basket dreys mimic natural dreys, and help to maximise the chance of a ringtail being successfully released back into their habitat. They can also help to supplement available accommodation for possums in your local area.
