IS THAT A VHS? is a film night with no rules about genre, era, style, runtime, director or language.
The only rule is there has to have been a VHS made of the film we are screening.
Modern technology allows us to stream any film at any time. But by offering us everything, in reality we are being served poorly. We live in a time where algorithms are cold and impersonal, and the homespun charm of VHS culture has been sadly lost.
IS THAT A VHS? celebrates the heyday of VHS, a time when selecting a film to watch on a Friday night felt like an event itself. Going to a video rental store or searching through options at home was fun, a million times more exciting than endlessly scrolling through Netflix being offered the same generic films over and over.
We screen curated and often underappreciated classics, in turn celebrating the best elements of 90s and early noughties video culture, where any snobbery or film bro energy is left firmly at the cinema door.
