IS THAT A VHS? Presents - Sexy Beast (2000)

At time of writing, 9,398 days of the 21st century have elapsed. Regardless of which Best Films of the Century... so far! list you find yourself reading, generally the same films and usual suspects are mentioned.

But from our perspective, everything has been more or less downhill since day #257 because that date marked the release of Jonathan Glazer’s acclaimed directorial debut Sexy Beast.

Has there ever been a more stylish, composed or captivating effort from a first time director?

Has Ray Winstone ever been better cast as Gal Dove, a washed up Cockney criminal, who just wants to enjoy his retirement in Spain drinking beers on a lilo?

Has any villain in film history terrified audiences quite like Don Logan, the psychotic mob boss played by Ben Kingsley, forcing Gal back for one last job?

If you have seen Sexy Beast, you know the answers to these questions.

If you have never seen Sexy Beast, we are envious on your behalf.

To celebrate the launch of IS THAT A VHS?, a new film night in Melbourne championing movies from the VHS era, we will be screening Sexy Beast on Friday 20th November at Champagne Video.

Tickets are only $10 each, which is less than it costs to do literally anything nowadays. Let alone watch an all time classic in a lovely cinema/cocktail bar/video store tucked away in Fitzroy North.

The cinema will be ours from 8:30 but the bar is open earlier so we would love you to join beforehand for a drink and a peruse at Champagne Video’s mightily impressive VHS collection. There will be a short introduction to the film starting at 8:45 and drinks in the bar afterwards for a chat about what has just unfolded.

We won't take no for an answer.
