Asian Studies was established at the University of Tasmania by George Wilson (1907-1991) in 1945 at a time when Asia was ‘essentially ignored by almost all other universities in Australia.’
Japanese language was established in 1975 by Dr Maria Flutsch. It is housed in the newly established Politics, Media and Languages program in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and is the largest language currently taught at the University.
