Good Data Institute (GDI) and Melbourne Centre for Data Science (MCDS) invite you to an evening discussion focussed on how data science can empower not-for-profit organisations to make wise decisions.
Join us on Wednesday August 21 for a rich conversation about the challenges of and strategies for incorporating data science into the operations of a not-for-profit.

For this in-person session, we’ll be hearing about the collaboration between Pride By Side and Good Data Institute, which centred around data capability development and dashboard development of “Pointing to Progress”—Australia’s first national survey to understand the capacity needs of LGBTQIA+ initiatives.

In Australia, less than 0.25% of funding and resourcing from governments, philanthropists, foundations, or donors goes to LGBTQIA+ specific causes (on average). This is reflected in less than 2% of LGBTQIA+ initiatives report having the right resources, capacity, or skillsets to robustly and sufficiently achieve their goals.

Pride By Side’s mission is to help build the capacities of with the rainbow LGBTQIA+ initiatives sector by connecting in all forms of capacity building - from marketing and branding to IT support; initiatives in need to inform experts and resources.

Lee Crockford

Lee is a strategist and non-executive director who uses facilitation, engagement, and design to create better outcomes for organisations and communities. As Director of Pride by Side, he’s passionate about building the capacities of LGBTQIA+ initiatives and using data to better understand the sector.

Ashish Chopra

Ashish is an Analytics Team Lead at SafetyCulture (Aus unicorn). Ashish has volunteered with the Good Data Institute for over three years with multiple NFPs on survey design, impact assessment and digitisation. He also has a background in Computer Science and Data and Analytics.

Kirsten Doert Eccles (moderator)

At Melbourne Centre for Data Science, Kirsten curates and facilitates a dynamic program of research-oriented activities. She has created and implemented an array of initiatives for early and mid-career researchers, faculty, alumni and external stakeholders – including conferences, interdisciplinary series, hack events, workshops and diversity in data events. Central to her work is the desire to foster collaborative partnerships and find ways to expand the centre’s vision into the future.
