How should we think about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Education?

Event description

Professor Sam Sellar is Dean of Research for Education Futures and Professor of Education Policy at the University of South Australia. Sam’s research focuses on education policy, education data and AI in education.

He is currently co-investigator for an Australia Research Council grant titled Artificial Intelligence in education: Democratising policy. He has also recently published a book titled Algorithms of Education: How datafication and artificial intelligence shape policy, co-authored with Kalervo N. Gulson and P. Taylor Webb.

Following the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, there has been a lot of speculation about AI transforming education.

Will new digital platforms radically disrupt schools and universities? Are teachers at risk of being replaced by AI? What can be done about students using AI to cheat on assignments? This talk will draw on ten years of research into AI in education and insights from the philosophy of technology to consider how we should think about AI and the futures of education.

Whilst this lecture will be of particular interest to educators and parents, the lecture will be suitable for anyone in the community interested in the impact of AI.
