Creating research impact and getting people excited about your research and data doesn’t always happen by simply sending them an academic paper or article. So how can you quickly summarise your data in a way that grabs attention, while also making it easy to understand and remember?
Infographics and visualisations are the answer.
HSRAANZ is hosting a workshop led by Alana Pirrone from the University of Melbourne, which will explore how to transform research findings into engaging and easy-to-understand visuals.

Workshop Overview:
This hands-on workshop equips participants with the foundational skills to design clear, effective infographics, perfect for communicating complex ideas visually.
We’ll explore core design principles, practical tools, and real-world examples, and work together to build a simple infographic from scratch using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Understanding your audience
What makes a great infographic
Core design principles: simplicity, alignment, order, accuracy, hierarchy, whitespace, and typography
The infographic design process: from concept to completion
Visual elements: using colour, contrast, size, icons, direction, and fonts for impact
Quick wins: simple infographic elements like quotes, icons, and images
About the presenter
Alana Pirrone is a Design and Data Visualisation Consultant. She is also the Design and Communications Coordinator for the Disasters, Climate and Adversity Unit at The University of Melbourne.
She specialises in data visualisation for knowledge translation. Utilising the Adobe Creative Cloud suite and Microsoft Office suite, Alana has expertise in designing infographics, data visualisations, technical and plain language reports, conference presentations and other knowledge translation materials.

Course Requirements:
No design experience is required. Participants should bring an example of research/research impact to be transformed into an infographic during the practical part of the course.
