    Event description

To begin our 2024 concert cycle, Wellington Youth Choir presents Huakina, a celebration of wāhine, nonbinary and irawhiti choral composers from Wellington and around the motu.

Meaning 'to open', Huakina is designed to uplift and make space for new and experienced non-male composers and to showcase their work to a brand new audience.WYC is delighted to announce that a number of pieces are composed by both current and ex-members of the choir, with some being written specially for this concert. These pieces will premiere alongside works by acclaimed New Zealand composers such as Takerei Komene and Georgina Palmer.

The choir is conduced by Rowan Johnson and accompanied by Nick Kovacev. This concert, and the Wellignton Youth Choir is supported by the Wellington City Council.

Wellington Youth Choir is a self-run, mixed choir for 17-27 year olds in the Wellington region consisting of around 50 students and young professionals. The choir provides a fantastic opportunity for experienced singers to continue singing at a high standard, and for newcomers to get involved in a choir for the first time.

Audience members are welcome to wear masks throughout the concert if in close proximity with others. Please stay home if you are feeling unwell to keep the choir and other audience members safe.

Door sales will be available, dependent on seating availability.
