Event description

The Hugh Stretton Oration 2024

Join us for our annual The Hugh Stretton Oration established in 2021 in honour of the late Emeritus Professor Hugh Stretton AC.

Our guest speaker and graduate of The University of Adelaide, Danielle Wood will explore the topic of Inequality in Australia and discuss "what role does government policy play?". Danielle will present her insights into economic inequality, how it has changed over time and explore the factors that contribute to how different groups are faring and whether governments can and should do more.

Danielle Wood commenced a 5-year term as Chair of the Productivity Commission on 13 November 2023. Prior to joining the Commission, she was CEO of the Grattan Institute and Head of its Budgets and Government Program. During her time at Grattan, Danielle also held roles as member of the Australian Government’s Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce, the Parliamentary Budget Office Expert Advisory Committee, the Jobs and Skills Australia Consultative Forum and the Australia and New Zealand School of Government Research Committee.

We hope you can join us to engage with this social, economic, and political discourse with responses from Professor Fran Baum: Director Stretton Health Equity, University of Adelaide and Professor Emma Baker: Professor of Housing and Research, University of Adelaide.
