Hidden in Plain Sight: Human Trafficking Victimization and Response
Event description
Human trafficking is a crime that thrives in the shadows, hiding in plain sight. It survives, because most people do not know they are seeing it when it is in front of them.
In this workshop, you will learn how to identify human trafficking both in the community and in your place of practice, how to respond when you suspect trafficking, and how to help trafficking survivors heal.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define trafficking locally and globally
- Identify five types of trafficking
- Recognize barriers preventing victims from leaving trafficking situations
- Assess if someone has been trafficked
- Explain Brainwashing, Undue Influence, Trauma Bonds, and Stockholm Syndrome in relation to trafficking
- Develop a treatment plan for trafficking survivors
- Define Post-Traumatic Growth and its relevance to trafficking

Shari Kim, PhD, CCDC, is a trauma psychologist at Chase Brexton Health Care. She is active in anti-trafficking efforts in Pennsylvania and Maryland, and as a noted expert in the field, collaborates with community partners and serves on multiple task forces.
Dr. Kim has over 20 years' experience in mental health. She founded Susquehanna Valley Community Mental Health Services and serves as the chapter coordinator for disaster mental health services with the American Red Cross National Capital Chapter.
