Today, investors are able to identify “good” companies and “profitable” companies but the challenge lies in identifying companies doing the most good most profitably. Central to the concept of shared value is the link between social impact and financial performance and although companies are successfully developing shared value strategies that create competitive advantage, many struggle to communicate the financial benefits of their social impact to investors.

In a new research report from the Shared Value Initiative, “Hybrid Metrics: Connecting Shared Value to Shareholder Value,” a new approach is introduced that combines companies' social and environmental impact with standard measures of financial performance, making the connection between the two explicit.

Speakers:

Mark Kramer is a leading researcher, writer, speaker and consultant on strategies for social impact. He is best known as the co-author of seminal articles on Creating Shared Value in Harvard Business Review and Collective Impact in Stanford Social Innovation Review.

He has also written extensively on impact investing, systems change, and strategic evaluation. His most recent research is on moving beyond Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) by communicating the economic value of corporate social impact to investors.

Mark co-founded FSG with Professor Michael Porter and serves as a Managing Director of the 150-person global social impact consulting firm. FSG also supports three communities of practice: The Shared Value Initiative, the Collective Impact Forum and Talent Rewire.

Mark is also a Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School, a member of the Aspen Philanthropy Group, and serves on advisory boards for Nestle and Kimberly-Clark. Previously, Mark served as President of the private equity firm Kramer Capital Management. He holds a BA from Brandeis University, MBA from The Wharton School, and JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Dr Nadira Lamrad leads the sustainability and ESG advisory team at Business Environment Council advising corporate clients on how to develop and communicate sustainability strategies, initiatives and performance. She monitors and analyses the latest market and regulatory developments to advise clients on potential ESG risks and opportunities.

Dr Lamrad has worked with a number of large and small and medium enterprises providing guidance and advisory services regarding their sustainability strategy, benchmarking, policy development and reporting. In her academic capacity, Dr Lamrad's expertise covers global governance, private regulation, corporate responsibility and sustainability. As she investigated the role of business in sustainable development, Dr Lamrad introduced innovative models for understanding how corporate responsibility is operationalised in different jurisdictions.

For the past decade, Dr Lamrad has applied her wide-ranging expertise to cultivate thought leadership around corporate sustainability, develop and execute sustainability strategies, and assess and improve overall performance.
