Hyoshi in Counterpoint
Event description
Get ready to experience the electrifying sound of Hyoshi in Counterpoint - a trail blazing all-female Asian fusion band that’s rewriting the rules of contemporary music.
This vibrant ensemble of six powerhouse musicians blends the soul of tradition with the pulse of the modern world, wielding instruments like the Chinese guzheng (Zhao Liang), Japanese shamisen (Noriko Tadano), Japanese drums (Satomi Ohnishi), violin (Karen DeNardi), cello (Monica Myung), keyboard, and soaring vocals (Jennifer Trijo). Each performance is a dazzling explosion of colour, energy, and cultural harmony - where East meets West in a bold, genre-defying celebration. With every beat, Hyoshi doesn’t just play music, they ignite a movement.
These six women, each rooted in diverse musical traditions, have forged a distinctive artistic synergy through their performances and workshops, such as the Nexus Arts Orchestra and the Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP) Artist Lab. Since their debut at OzAsia 2022, the ensemble has performed at the Adelaide Festival Centre's 50th Birthday Concert, OzAsia Lucky Dumpling Market, and was featured on the ABC National Music Show with Andrew Ford in 2023.
