Event description

Join Satellite Foundation for a special film screening of the award-winning documentary, 'I am Eleven'. Seen in over 50 countries, ‘I am Eleven’ is a deeply personal and at times hilarious portrait of what it means to be an 11-year-old, standing on the cusp of childhood and adolescence. The  screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film's director Genevieve Bailey, Satellite’s Youth and Consultation Coordinator, Mia Boonen and young people from the Satellite community.

Australian filmmaker Genevieve Bailey travelled the world for six years talking with 11-year-olds to compose this insightful, funny and moving documentary portrait of childhood. From an orphanage in India, to a single parent household in inner-city Melbourne, to bathing with elephants in Thailand I Am Eleven explores the lives and thoughts of children from all around the world. It weaves together deeply personal and at times hilarious portraits of what it means to stand on the cusp between childhood and adolescence, that fleeting moment when childish naiveté has faded, yet teenaged self-consciousness has not yet taken hold. These young minds, still unguarded and remarkably honest, offer a powerful insight into the future of our world.

…there’s something exhilarating about the movie’s reach and quiet ambition, and the thoughtful, bold, confident, wide-eyed and expressive 11-year-olds at its centre.” – THE AGE

Join us for this special film screening and Q&A on Sunday 19 November

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Genevieve Bailey where we invite young people to join in our conversations about:

• What it feels like to be 11, and on the cusp of childhood and adolescence
• What supports children who are navigating big challenges in their family/community may need
• How children experience mental health challenges and other life adversity in their family is unique, and can result in positive outcomes as well as impact on their own mental health and wellbeing
