Event description

Up-cycled graphic style Textile Art – Applique, with a conceptual theme – The power of Personal Mantras

Come and explore the ancient form of textile artwork with a modern twist. Using the Applique technique with up-cycled materials to create an image celebrating the female form whilst also delving into the power of Personal Mantra’s. Applique is ornamental needlework where fabric patches are layered on a foundation fabric, then stitched in place by hand or machine with raw edges turned under or covered with decorative stitching to form a picture or pattern.

Throughout history the female form has been celebrated and revered as many things, a source of life, a goddess or muse, something to be seen and adored from a distance ‘the male gaze’, however in this workshop we will be celebrating the naked female form for its raw beauty and strength, using the female form as a representation of our most raw, authentic and vulnerable selves and harnessing the strength we already have within, with words used as personal mantras so the art works can be used as a tool, to prompt daily reminders of how we can manifest real change in our lives with the words we wish to embody.

No experience is necessary. This is an 18+ workshop

Mum’a Nai’s Exhibition is being exhibited at NorthSIte Contemporary Arts on the Long Wall from Friday 12th April 2024

About the facilitator:

Mum’a Nai (Naomi Evans) is an emerging artist born in Cairns in 1985. She has been creating from home her whole life, and most of her previous work has been around repurposing used and discarded objects, exploring the notion of beauty and function, and has previously dabbled in work doing floristry and making pallet wood furniture. This has created flexibility to explore different styles, materials, and mediums outside the box, resulting in a crossover between traditional and contemporary craft and conceptual art. Her influences are her parents and grandparents, who were all creative in a variety of ways, and instilled a deep-seated value around repurposing. Her practice focuses on the female form, human condition, exploring feelings, connection, community, belief systems and ideologies, storytelling, sharing positive messages and personal life experiences. This current work has been inspired by Tracey Emin and Jessica So Ren Tang.

Nai is currently working on a group exhibition for a female based theme – ‘Resilience in the Face of Adversity’, to be exhibited in line with International Woman’s Day in 2025.

Naomi has 15 years experience running group workshops, has a Diploma in Visual Arts and run's creative workshops through her own arts practice and business.
